AFTER
I started with a purchase at Goodwill for $2.99. Then Ezra and I removed parts of it. Ezra cut some wood to add a door and some holes for sink and faucet. I found some fabric for under $10 that was a perfect match for the room and the look I was aiming for. I wanted vintage and something that wasn't too "toyish" looking.
It was the last thing that we gave to the girls on Christmas morning. It was just covered with a sheet downstairs. We took them down and told them that mommy and daddy made them something special. I unveiled it and they just stared. I asked if they knew what it was and they replied a house. I answered, "kind of, it's a kitchen." Then they both scooted off in opposite directions. I figured that they had other toys to play with.
Turns out they went gathering...they returned immediately and I understood that they were still working with the "house" definition of my kitchen because they both had things to set up house. They moved right in with the table, chairs, food, kitchen devices (a new gift), baskets, dolls, etc.
Even if this toy grows old, I had a lot of fun making it and Ezra got in on the fun also. The downstairs is really for their play and their toys, so though it's a bit large...it's right for them and the room's purpose.

I love it!! It's so crafty and cute...I'm so impressed with your deal!!
It looks awesome, Melanie and Ezra! Great job. It looks so much nicer than the store made plastic ones. It certainly is a piece to be proud of.
LOVE IT!! I've been dreaming of doing the same thing!
Melanie, this gift is truly an inspiration in many ways: first, it gave you a means to express your motherly love; secondly, it became a magnet for Ezra to add his talent for the same reason, both to you and the twins; thirdly, the girls actively grew an appliance into a multi-purpose room; fourth, Khanchi too has impetus for her project-life! As for me, it gives me reason to think and comment.
